What Is CNC Milling and How Does It Work?
CNC milling is a high-precision subtractive manufacturing process that removes material from a solid workpiece using computer-controlled rotating cutting tools. It starts with a CAD (Computer-Aided Design) file, which is translated into a CNC program that directs the machine’s precise movements.
The material is clamped securely to the machine bed, while a high-speed spindle drives the cutting tool to follow the programmed toolpath. This enables the machine to carve out the desired shape with exceptional accuracy, producing features like slots, holes, pockets, and complex surface contours.
CNC milling machines operate in different configurations. Standard 3-axis milling involves movement along the X, Y, and Z axes. A 4-axis setup introduces rotational movement around one axis, while 5-axis CNC milling allows rotation around two additional axes, enabling the machining of highly complex geometries in a single setup.
Thanks to its precision and versatility, CNC milling is widely used across industries such as aerospace, automotive, medical, and electronics manufacturing.
